Like many people, I spent Saturday afternoon with half an eye on the television. The news media were all excited about the tsunami that was supposed to be heading for Hawaii. It never arrived. Somewhere, in its journey across the Pacific Ocean, it lost its power. It merely delivered a few out-of-the-ordinary waves along the island shores. How like life! We fear impending disasters. We worry about relationships going wrong, jobs being lost, sicknesses getting out of hand,
finances falling apart, and so on. Most of the things that we fear today are forgotten tomorrow. (Well, maybe not tomorrow, but pretty soon.) It is rare that events turn out as badly as we fear: our imaginations can be our own worst enemies. Who was it that said worry is interest we pay on money we haven‟t yet borrowed? That is certainly true. If only we could learn to trust God to take care of things. He will always give us the strength and the means to handle our issues when they arise: we just need to keep this in mind. As the prophet Isaiah said, so long ago, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, whose thoughts are fixed on you!”
There is a story of a man who was driving down a road in the dark. A sign warned of a sharp left turn. He was so absentminded at that moment that he turned left before he got there and wrecked his car. We can all be like that at times. Anticipating our troubles can get us down far more than the real life events when they come. Let‟s leave more of the future to God: we will do a better job of driving round today‟s curves if we do.
