Tonight is going to be some night! The MLS All Stars, eleven of America‟s greatest soccer players, will play Manchester United, arguably the greatest soccer club in the world. The stadium will be packed and the excitement will be intense. I would really like to be there.
This is a rare match. Normally a ball game is played in a city where one team is at home and the other is „away,‟ on the road. Home teams usually have the greater support, and that makes all the difference. A team which is backed by thousands of cheering voices, can be truly inspired. But to play with poor support can sap your energy and drag you down. This evening we will have to see which team rides on the greater wave of encouragement. The winning team may well be carried to success by the enthusiasm of its supporters.
You and I are not playing soccer: we are engaged in a different constest. The Bible says we are at war with the powers of evil. Does that seem too dramatic? Maybe it isn‟t. The world and its people are overwhelmed by greed and the love of
power. The need for people to care about one another has never been greater. In this great contest, our strategy is as described by the Apostle Paul: „overcome evil with good,‟ (Romans 12:21).
As we do this, we should never forget that people can be carried to victory by the support and encouragement of others. The Bible tells us to "think of ways to encourage one another to outbursts of love and good deeds,‟ (Hebrews
10:24). Read those words over again. "Think of ways……‟ Let us all become better at recognizing the kindness others show and congratulating them for it. Let us encourage one another by talking about the possibilities for doing good, which are all around us. This will spur people on to greater victory in God‟s battle for the hearts and minds of the world.
